Happy New Year!  May the blessings of the Lord shine upon you!

 

We are excited about the Kirksey Family Reunion 2012. We are hoping that everyone will recognize the importance of family and will do their best to attend the Kirksey Family Reunion 2012 in the wonderful city of Huntsville, Alabama.  We believe that you will be pleasantly surprised at the elegance and relevance of what we are putting together to make this a memorable experience for all who attend.

 

The Planning Committee in Huntsville has been gathering information about Huntsville, seeking some great venues, and visiting some great accommodations for our Reunion.

 

Our major purpose for the Kirksey Family Reunion 2012 is to connect our family to our roots.

I have just recently found some interesting history concerning our family.

One of my most recent finds is Green Berry, Sr. and family lived in Tunica County, Mississippi during the 1920 Census.

 

As we discover our roots, this year we will establish our family tree from Green Berry Kirksey, Sr. to his current family descendants.

This will take some work, but I have a plan to get this done quickly and efficiently. ALL I NEED IS YOU!!!!

 

We NEED a family member from each of the family units below to participate in establishing the family tree and participate in the final planning of the Kirksey Reunion 2012.

Harvard University Announcement

Harvard University announced over the weekend that from now on undergraduate students from low-income families will pay no tuition.  In making the announcement, Harvard's president Lawrence H. Summers said, "When only ten percent of the students in elite higher education come from families in the lower half of the income distribution, we are not doing enough.  We are not doing enough in bringing elite higher education to the lower half of the income distribution."  

If you know of a family earning less than $60,000 a year with an honor student graduating from high school soon, Harvard University wants to pay the tuition.  The prestigious university recently announced that from now on undergraduate students from low-income families can go to
         Harvard for free... no tuition and no student loans!

Dear Marquette:
 
I do appreciate the many informative E-mails that you provide regarding the Cook Family.  I do read all of them although I rarely get a chance to respond to them.  Regarding a recent one however, I had to find the time to give you a response.
 
Please let this memo serve as a huge thank you to Doris Brown for her info regarding Dr. Ben Carson.  Although I have not personally met Dr. Carson, I have great respect and admiration for him.  We went to the same high-school, Detroit Southwestern (I am a few years older than he).  A few years ago while reading his very inspirational book, Gifted Hands, I learned that he and I have something else in common; our treasured mentor, Ms. Alma Whitley. 
 
Ms. Whitley was a counselor at Southwestern and although she was not my personal counselor and I did not know that she even knew I existed, she sought me out in my senior year and firmly told me "you are going to go to college".  I responded that college for me is not possible because I have no money for college and there was no way my single mom could help me go to college.  As if my words meant absolutely nothing to her, her blithely optimistic response simply was "okay, I heard what you said, but you are still going to go to college".  Because of her prodding, I too learned to be optimistic and to have a "can do" attitude.  It was Ms. Whitley's prodding that pushed me through college and through law school.  I still recall her positive attitude on those days when I need a little prodding to get through difficult times.
 
While reading Gifted Hands, I was amazed that Dr. Carson told almost the exact same story about Ms. Whitley.  She had also been his "inspiring motivator" when his life was in a "can't do" mode.  My guess now is that Ms. Whitley did this with many many students.  We all are eternally grateful. 
 
On September 4, 2004, I attended the Detroit Southwestern Classes of the 1960's Reunion at the Detroit Renaissance Center.  More than 600 people attended.  I held hope that Dr. Carson would be there but he was not.  People came from as far away as California, Washington State, and Berlin, Germany.  An announcement was made that Ms. Whitley, who had long ago retired and moved south, passed away earlier this year.  It was a very sad moment for all of us but her "can do" attitude is her legacy that lives on within all of her students.  Regarding Dr. Ben Carson, my "mentor-mate", please know that all of us from the old neighborhood have Dr. Carson in our deepest prayers and thoughts.

I think you're doing an excellent job with the Cook family website. Next year, for my 26th birthday, I'd like to take a personal journey to Greene County, AL and visit the cemeteries and any other historical sites in the area, associated with our family. I am always moved whenever I look at the historical photos of the sons of Charles Sr. and Sarah Ann. It's truly amazing how much Grandpa, Cato, Clarence and you resemble Arthur Cook.
 
But I have a suggestion about Sarah Ann. In the Brief Family History section, she's described as a 'full blooded Indian woman'. I feel that the Indian nation she belonged to should be noted. It's more specific, and it would honor her, as well as offer us more information about our full heritage. If you have access to that kind of information about her or if any family members from her side know what nation she belonged to, I think that it's important for all of us to have that information posted.

And you have probably seen this one. Israel is the nation most often mentioned in the Bible. But do you know which nation
is second? It is Iraq! However, that is not the name that is used in the Bible. The names used in the Bible are Babylon, Land
 
of Shinar, and Mesopotamia. The word Mesopotamia means between the two rivers, more exactly between the Tigris and

Euphrates Rivers. The name Iraq, means country with deep roots.
Indeed Iraq is a country with deep roots and is a very
significant country in the Bible.

No other nation, except Israel, has more history and prophecy associated it than Iraq.  And also... This is something to think about! Since America
is typically represented by an eagle. Saddam should have read up
on his Muslim passages...

The following verse is from the Koran, (the Islamic Bible)

Koran (9:11) - For it is written that a son of Arabia

would

awaken a fearsome Eagle. The wrath of the Eagle would be

felt

throughout the lands of Allah and lo, while some of the

people

trembled in despair still more rejoiced; for the wrath of
