Arthur Cook

Son of Charles and Sarah Cook

Charles and Sarah Cook were the parents of ten Children -- nine sons and one daughter. Arthur Cook was the oldest of the nine brothers. He was known as Papa Arthur, a proud man who in the late 1800's wore a white shirt and bow tie every day.

Arthur Cook and his wife Frances had nine children -- three sons and six daughters: Richard, James, Ross, Florence, Anna, Sara, Sallie, Flora Alice, and Sopha.

Their oldest child Richard Cook, married Mary Eliza Plump. Richard and Mary Cook were the parents of seven sons and four daughters: Allen, Augustus, Arthur, Richard, Joe, Adam, James, Mabel, Lucile, Mary Alice, and Rose.

Richard and Mary Cook lived in Boligee, AL. until their later years when they moved to Birmingham, Alabama. They then lived closer to two of their sons who still lives in Alabama. This is a close knit family who gathered every summer during their mother's lifetime. Mary Cook died in September 1959, Richard Cook in the summer of 1964.

Four of Richard and Mary Cook's children -- Papa Arthur's grandchildren -- are still living: Richard Cook and his wife Ethel; Joe Cook, Sr., and his wife Nannie Laura Brown Cook; Mary Alice Reel; and Rose Monford. Except for Joe Cook, Sr., they reside in Detroit, Michigan.

Of course, Arthur and Frances Cook have other children and their descendants who also have the good fortune of sharing their heritage.

The eldest of the nine brothers. The offspring of Arthur has produced the only black Supreme Court Justice for the state of Alabama, Justice Ralph D. Cook, Brenda Cook. Houston, is the first black Court Administrator for the U.S. Immigration Court. Nekeshia Cook is a graduate of Harvard Medical School.

Ms. Anna Wells 100 of 2143 South L. Street was born November 25, 1878 in Greene County, Alabama. near the town of Eutaw. Her parents Mr. & Mrs. Arthur Cook preceded her in death.

Her life was spent in Greene County and her uncle, Rev. Madison Cook baptized her in Cook's Chapel. She attended Tuskegee High in Tuskegee, Alabama. She was united in holy matrimony to John Wells Sr. and this union was blessed with three sons; Mr. John D. Wells Jr. of Tacoma, WA. Mr. James Wells of Birmingham, Alabama and Mr. Lorenzo Wells of Detroit, MI. four daughters Mrs. Willie(Ellen) See of Birimingham, Mrs Hattie-Bell James of Gadsden, Alabama, Mrs. Betty Powell of Boomer, West Virginia and Mrs. Juanita Baker of Cairo, Georgia. One sister Mrs. Florence Braggs of Greene County, 16 grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Florence Braggs was born to the late Mr. & Mrs. Arthur Cook February 22, 1890 in Greene County, Alabama.

She confessed Christ at an early age and joined the Cook Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church under the leadership of the Rev. F. W. Dandrige and was a faithful member there until the church no longer existed. She later became a member of the Free Hope Baptist Church where she could carry on her christian duty.

She was happily married to Mr. Sandy Braggs. She leaves to mourn one daughter: Mrs. Odessie Braggs, Eutaw, AL. a step-daughter: Amanda Braggs of Eutaw, AL. a step-son: Richard Braggs of Detroit, MI. and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

I am Donna Maria Burks...I live in Nashville, TN I want to keep in touch so I don't miss any reuinions and events.

My father is Willie Augustus Burks of Detroit MI. His mother was Ora Burks (Cook), His biological father (We think) is Cecil Kirksey. Ora Burks' mother was Sarah Cook. I am a descendant of Papa Arthur. I think we were in contact a few years ago..

The last reunion we — my father, my children and I attended was in Eutaw around 98 or so. His health began to decline, and he could no longer make the trips.

However my father has died. He died in October 2003 of emphysema. My dad was my only connection to Cook family events.

I really want to stay connected.

I know this is sorty choppy but I am excited that I found you.
